Chapter 329: Nether Beasts
Chapter 329: Nether Beasts
"Nina, the scouts I sent to White Sand City have returned with confirmation. The creatures really are Nether Beasts. White Sand City is already locked in a desperate battle."
Lani’s expression was grave, his voice heavy with concern.
"I’ll begin gathering our warriors immediately. Spend tonight making preparations. We leave for White Sand City at first light tomorrow."
Nina nodded.
"Alright."
As soon as Lani departed to mobilize the city’s forces, Nina gathered her mates and informed them of the situation.
Odian happened to know a little about Nether Beasts. He shared everything he remembered about their habits, strengths, and weaknesses. After listening carefully, Nina visited Little Bun and acquired a fresh supply of equipment, distributing it among their group to improve their chances in battle.
Preparations moved swiftly.
Before long, they set out for White Sand City.
What awaited them was far worse than anyone had imagined.
The city had been completely surrounded.
Nether Beasts swarmed across the landscape like a living tide, cutting off every avenue of escape. Buildings throughout the city lay shattered, their walls reduced to rubble by the relentless fighting.
Male warriors battled desperately on all sides.
At the center of the city, females and young cubs huddled together in the safest location available, protected by layers of defenders. Many of them had failed to escape before the siege tightened around the city, leaving them trapped inside.
Seated upon Odian’s back as they approached from the sky, Nina looked down at the battlefield below.
The sight made her heart sink.
Countless Nether Beasts crawled across the city.
The monsters resembled enormous amphibious toads, though far more terrifying. Long fangs protruded from their jaws. Thick scales armored their bodies. Sharp fins rose from their backs like jagged blades.
Their combat strength was astonishing.
Typically, it took several experienced males working together to bring down a single beast.
Near one corner of the city, a group of warriors was desperately fighting an especially massive Nether Beast.
The creature towered over the others.
The males opposing it were covered in wounds.
Again and again they were knocked to the ground, only to stagger back to their feet and continue fighting.
But exhaustion was catching up with them.
Defeat loomed ever closer.
The giant beast lashed out once more.
One of the warriors was hurled through the air and crashed heavily onto the ground.
This time, he did not rise.
"City Lord!"
"Sharon!"
Agony flashed across the faces of the remaining warriors.
Their grief quickly transformed into fury.
Roaring in rage, they launched another assault.
Yet their strength was nearly gone.
Within moments, they were thrown aside again.
Several struggled just to stand.
The surrounding Nether Beasts immediately seized the opportunity.
They broke through the weakened defensive line and surged toward the center of the city.
"Stop them!"
Shion’s desperate roar echoed across the battlefield.
"Protect the females and the cubs!"
No matter what happened, they could not allow the monsters to reach them.
Elsewhere among the defenders, Asgor fought while anxiously searching for a familiar figure from his memories.
The moment he saw the advancing horde targeting the civilians, he rushed forward without hesitation.
The males fought desperately to block the charge.
They failed.
The Nether Beasts were simply too powerful.
One defensive line after another collapsed.
Finally, the last barrier protecting the civilians shattered completely.
The monsters lunged forward, their grotesque faces twisted with hunger.
Screams erupted throughout the crowd.
Terrified cries from females mixed with the sobs of frightened children.
Despair filled Shion’s eyes.
Was this truly the end of White Sand City?
The Nether Beasts opened their enormous jaws and rushed toward their prey.
The females and cubs clung to one another, trembling with fear.
There was nowhere left to run.
Just as death seemed certain, a colossal vine suddenly swept across the battlefield.
The approaching monsters were struck with overwhelming force and hurled away like scattered leaves.
A beautiful figure descended from the sky.
She landed directly between the civilians and the advancing horde.
Massive walls of intertwined vines surged upward from the earth, forming an impenetrable barrier around the frightened crowd.
The Nether Beasts slammed against the living fortress but could not break through.
For a moment, the females and cubs simply stared.
Their fear faded into stunned disbelief.
Bathed in sunlight, standing before them like a guardian sent from the heavens, Nina appeared almost divine.
Had a goddess come to save them?
The enraged monsters turned toward her.
Their eyes filled with murderous intent.
To them, she was simply another meal.
The civilians watching from behind the vines felt their hearts leap into their throats.
They prayed desperately that their savior would remain safe.
Nina’s eyes grew cold.
With a wave of her hand, countless vines erupted from the ground.
They coiled around the Nether Beasts, binding their massive bodies in place.
Razor-sharp thorns burst forth and pierced deep into flesh and scale.
Painful shrieks echoed across the battlefield.
At that moment, the enormous Nether Beast leader sensed the threat she posed.
Abandoning its previous opponents, it charged directly toward her.
Nina remained perfectly calm.
Without taking her eyes off the advancing monster, she spoke to her mates and the warriors who had accompanied her.
"You handle the rest of the Nether Beasts."
Her gaze locked onto the colossal leader.
"I’ll take care of this one."
"Alright, but be careful, Nina."
Her mates and Lani followed her instructions without hesitation and moved to engage the remaining Nether Beasts. Keil stayed behind to assist her against the monstrous leader.
Nina turned to her spirit beasts.
"Roro. Goldy. Kill them."
The two creatures immediately sprang into action.
Roro let out an excited cry and expanded to its massive battle form. Flames erupted from its jaws in blazing torrents, sweeping across the battlefield. Wherever the fire passed, Nether Beasts collapsed in droves, their ranks thrown into chaos.
The spirit beast was practically bursting with excitement.
At last, it had a chance to prove itself in front of its master.
Lately, it had begun to suspect Nina had almost forgotten she even owned a spirit beast.
Goldy was no less enthusiastic.
After spending endless days lounging in trees and doing nothing, it was thrilled to finally have a worthy fight. In its opinion, battle was far more entertaining than idleness.
Below, Shion and the exhausted defenders saw the reinforcements arrive.
Hope ignited in their eyes.
Help had finally come.
They might actually survive.
When Shion saw Nina’s power for the first time, astonishment flashed across his face.
What an incredibly powerful female.
Noticing that Nina and Keil were confronting the Nether Beast leader, he immediately rushed to join them.
That creature was terrifyingly strong.
He feared they might not be able to handle it alone.
Elsewhere, Asgor stared at Nina in surprise.
Her?
For a moment he was stunned.
Then understanding settled over him.
No wonder the sacred artifact had acknowledged her.
The battle raged on relentlessly.
Vines lashed through the air.
Explosions of power shook the city.
The Nether Beast leader gradually began to lose ground beneath the relentless assault.
Finally, realizing it could not win, the creature shot Nina a venomous glare before turning and charging toward the sea.
It intended to flee.
Nina had no intention of allowing that.
She immediately gave chase.
The battle continued beneath the waves.
The moment she entered the ocean, she activated the sacred staff.
Immense power surged through her body.
The strength of the sea itself answered her call.
Boundless currents flowed into her veins, amplifying her abilities to astonishing levels.
The Nether Beast leader was completely overwhelmed.
Wounds covered its body.
Its scales shattered.
Its flesh tore open under her attacks.
The creature roared in agony before bursting back out of the water and returning to land.
Watching from a distance, Shion’s eyes widened.
That female could command the power of the ocean itself.
Nina pursued relentlessly.
Again and again, she struck the monster with devastating force.
The creature’s body became riddled with injuries.
Yet it refused to die.
No matter how much damage it suffered, it somehow remained alive.
The same was true of many of the other Nether Beasts.
Nina frowned.
Just as Lani had warned.
They were unbelievably difficult to kill.
Under normal circumstances, White Sand City’s defenders never would have stood a chance.
Fortunately, Roro and Goldy had already slaughtered large numbers of lesser beasts.
Nina herself could destroy ordinary Nether Beasts as well.
But the leader was different.
No matter what she tried, it simply refused to die.
As she searched for a solution, a sudden movement caught her attention.
A massive white beast appeared from nowhere and landed beside her.
Nina blinked in surprise.
The creature resembled a lion, though a graceful horn curved from its head. Snow-white fur shimmered beneath the sunlight, giving it an almost sacred appearance.
Its presence radiated calm dignity.
For a moment, Nina simply stared.
Where had this creature come from?
The white beast turned toward her and met her gaze.
Though it never spoke a word, Nina somehow understood its intention immediately.
It wanted to fight alongside her.
She nodded.
Judging from its appearance and aura, it felt less like a wild beast and more like some kind of divine guardian.
Perhaps it had truly been sent by the Beast God.
Whatever the truth, there would be time to wonder later.
First, they needed to kill the Nether Beast leader.
Drawing upon both stellar power and the strength of the ocean, Nina unleashed another barrage of attacks.
She quickly discovered that these forces seemed particularly effective against the creatures.
Meanwhile, soft golden light began radiating from the white beast’s body.
The glow spread rapidly across White Sand City.
As the light touched the battlefield, a remarkable change occurred.
The Nether Beasts suddenly became far easier to kill.
One after another, they began falling.
The defenders immediately noticed the difference.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, Nina gathered her power for one final strike.
The attack pierced straight through the Nether Beast leader.
This time, the creature finally collapsed.
Dead.
Nina glanced toward the white beast.
This mysterious creature was remarkably useful.
Without wasting another second, she joined the remaining battles across the city.
Together with the warriors of White Sand City and the reinforcements from Sea Blue City, they hunted down the surviving monsters.
The fighting continued for a long time.
Eventually, the final Nether Beast fell.
Silence swept across the battlefield.
Then came the cheers.
Deafening cheers.
The survivors of White Sand City erupted into celebration.
Many laughed.
Many cried.
Others simply collapsed to the ground, overwhelmed by relief.
They had survived.
At long last, the nightmare was over.
Yet amidst the celebration, the white beast suddenly staggered.
Its body swayed.
Then it collapsed.
The enormous divine creature rapidly shrank, its majestic form disappearing.
Moments later, only a tiny cub remained lying on the ground.
Weakness clouded its eyes.
A trace of frustration appeared within them.
As expected, the backlash from Devour’s power had finally caught up with it.
