Chapter 64 Assassins Arrive!
Chapter 64 Assassins Arrive!
Lin Jianguo, wearing reading glasses and with thick fingers, fumbled on the oilcloth for a long time before finally unraveling it layer by layer with trembling hands.
The parchment booklet was exposed; the paper was yellowed and brittle, the edges were curled, and it smelled of old oil.
Sailing log.
Lin Jianguo's hands trembled even more violently as he snatched the booklet and held it up to the light to read.
The first page is written with carbon ink, exuding a reckless and daring spirit.
"If this booklet is ever seen, the descendants of the Lin family must never go to sea to find that eye."
Lin Chen's heart skipped a beat.
Lin Jianguo didn't say anything, but turned the pages one by one. His breathing became heavier and heavier, and his chest rose and fell.
The diary entry states that Grandpa Lin Dafa did not encounter a storm that year.
He and his old buddies on the boat were forced to go to sea by an organization called Deep Sea Eye, which threatened the lives of the entire village.
Their task was not to fish.
They would use that dilapidated fishing boat as a live target to lure a large creature out from the depths of the Dragon's Back Trench, so that the organization's research vessel could pinpoint the exact location of the sea eye.
"Beast...beast."
Lin Jianguo roared, his eyes red as if he wanted to kill someone.
Lin Chen clenched his fist, and his bones cracked.
He finally understood why his father never mentioned the Dragon's Back Trench, and why that sea had become a lifelong source of anguish for him. This wasn't a natural disaster; it was a man-made catastrophe, a murder.
Lin Jianguo turned to the last page of the diary. The handwriting on it was messy and chaotic, and it looked like it was written when the ship was rocking violently.
Just as the giant monster ensnared the ship, about to drag it into the sea, Grandpa used a fire axe to cut the signal cable connecting it to the research vessel. He intended to drag the monster and the Deep Sea Eye's detection equipment down with him.
In the end, the diary contained a line written in blood, which was utterly despairing.
"The hull...exploded...they..."
Lin Jianguo froze, and finally, his turbid tears couldn't be held back any longer, falling in large drops onto the yellowed paper and spreading the ink.
Grandpa wasn't dragged down by a sea monster.
They didn't die in the storm either.
After he cut the mooring ropes, deciding to die with the enemy, he was remotely detonated by the people of Deepsea Eye, who detonated the explosives at the bottom of the ship.
He watched helplessly as he sank into the cold, dark sea in the direction of Huangni Village.
"dad."
Lin Chen's voice was a little dry.
Lin Jianguo could no longer hold on. He collapsed onto the table. This man, who had never shed a tear in his life, was shaking violently and let out a suppressed sob.
The old house was deathly silent.
Lin Chen didn't try to persuade his father. He reached out and picked up the bronze fish talisman from the corner of the table.
Upon first touch, it's icy cold, like the feel of a metal object.
He rubbed the spiral pattern on the surface of the fish-shaped talisman with his fingers, silently chanting in his mind.
"System, analyze this thing."
The next second, the blue screen on his wrist exploded into a glaring crimson color.
The red color, like blood, carries a strong warning.
Lines of unfamiliar data were being frantically refreshed.
[Warning! Strong biomagnetic field signal detected.]
[Warning! This thing has been cursed by the deep sea (High-dimensional signal analysis: Submicron-level tracking beacon) and is emitting high-frequency pulse signals.]
This isn't some precious keepsake; it's a troublesome tracker.
Almost at that moment, Lin Chen's ears twitched slightly.
He heard a very faint sound outside the window.
It was the sound of shoes stepping on wet mud, very soft.
Lin Chen's expression remained unchanged. He stood up, walked to the table, and picked up the thermos.
"Dad, have some water."
While he was pouring water for Lin Jianguo, he shielded Lin Jianguo with his body and gently pressed the old-fashioned light switch on the wall with his finger.
"Smack."
The dim light bulb in the room went out.
The courtyard immediately went dark.
Lin Jianguo was startled by the sudden darkness. Just as he was about to speak, Lin Chen leaned close to his ear and whispered something.
"Don't make a sound, stay still."
Before he could finish speaking, Lin Chen had already silently climbed out of the back window and disappeared into the orchard behind the house.
In the darkness, he saw three dark figures creeping towards the main house from three directions, forming a standard encirclement formation.
They were dressed in dark gray, tight-fitting combat suits and wore infrared goggles; their movements were very professional.
Infiltration at the level of international mercenaries.
Lin Chen's heart sank.
They arrived way too fast.
He didn't back down, nor did he consider calling the police. Calling the police is useless against this kind of person.
Lin Chen hid in the shadow of a lychee tree, lowered his body, and prepared to make his move.
A dark figure crouched down by the back window and pulled out a thin piece of metal from his waist to pick the lock.
Right now.
Lin Chen moved.
He pushed off the ground with his feet and pounced on the man's back.
Before the man could react, a large hand covered his mouth and nose from behind, while another arm tightened around his neck.
"Click."
A crisp sound of bones breaking.
The shadowy figure didn't even have time to struggle before its body went limp and it died on the spot.
Lin Chen didn't stop moving. He could feel the other person's jaw tighten as he was being choked, as if he wanted to crush the poison hidden in his teeth.
The other two shadowy figures immediately realized their companion was missing. They reacted swiftly, abandoning their infiltration, and huddled together back to back, drawing daggers from their waists.
Using the trees as cover, Lin Chen darted around in the orchard and circled around to their side.
The leader seemed to realize something, and suddenly turned around, the alloy dagger in his hand flashing cold light.
Instead of retreating, Lin Chen advanced, dodging the knife by sidestepping it. He then reached out with his right hand, grabbed the other man's wrist, and twisted it sharply.
The other person cried out in pain and dropped the dagger.
Lin Chen snatched the dagger and swung his elbow, striking the other man in the temple.
The man groaned and fell straight down.
The remaining man didn't intend to fight; instead, he suddenly pulled a cylindrical object from his waist and smashed it on the ground.
"Bang."
A burst of white light, and my ears rang.
Flashbang grenade.
Lin Chen instinctively closed his eyes and turned to the side to avoid it.
When he opened his eyes again, before the bright light and smoke had even dissipated, the man had already dragged his seriously injured companion and disappeared along the ridges of the fields outside the village, vanishing without a trace.
Lin Chen didn't chase after him.
He stood there, staring in the direction the shadow had disappeared, his eyes cold.
He looked down and picked up a coin that had fallen from the spot where the fight had just taken place.
On the obverse of the coin, the strange fish emblem is the same as the one on the bronze fish symbol.
The reverse side of the coin is engraved with a string of small numbers, resembling a set of coordinates.
At this point, a new task appears on the system panel.
[New quest chain activated: The Abyss is watching you]
[First Stage: Hunter and Prey]
[Mission Description: You have become prey of the Eye of the Deep. When the hunter appears, the prey had better show its teeth.]
Lin Chen clenched the coin in his hand, feeling the cold engravings on it.
Hunter and prey?
Lin Chen's lips twitched slightly, but he didn't smile.
It's still uncertain who the hunter and the prey are.
